Mamelodi Sundowns Draw 1-1 to SuperSport
Reigning Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, registered a rare 1-1 draw to SuperSport United FC on Tuesday, 12 March.
Playing on their home ground at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, Gauteng, Sundowns maintained a strong possession (79%) of the ball throughout the game, although their visitors held them at bay with a strong defence strategy from the get-go.
After the first 30 minutes of play, the Brazilians broke the goalless deadlock: midfielder Teboho Mokoena fired a splendid shot from outside the penalty area, one that effortlessly sailed past goalkeeper Washington Arubi.
However, there was little time for the champs to celebrate, as SuperSport retaliated four minutes later in the form of a side-foot kick at the far post by striker Bradley Grobler.
The second half saw the exciting pace slow down, although SuperSport still had enough fire in them to prevent Sundowns from scoring once more. Ultimately, the final score was 1-1.
As a result, Mamelodi Sundowns – who extended their unbeaten run to 42 league games – remain at the top of the PSL table with 46 points, while SuperSport United sit in third place with 33 points.
