Mamelodi Sundowns Steal Last-Minute Victory Over Swallows
Mamelodi Sundowns secured a nail-biting 2-0 victory over the Swallows on Tuesday, 3 December, ending a 12-match goal drought for the team.
Despite a slow start, the match – which was held at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, Gauteng – quickly heated up in the second half.
A sterling defence by the Swallows held the Sundowners at bay for the first 45 minutes of the match. However several poorly thought-out substitutions during the second half by the Swallows saw the previously impenetrable defence crumble.
The game’s first goal was scored in the 63rd minute, as midfielder Neo Maema broke away from the pack with some decisive footwork. The second goal came a mere four minutes later, as striker Themba – assisted by midfielder Cassius Mailula – secured a win for his team.
During the post-match press conference, Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena said: “Victory is a relief for us as we struggled to break down a tight Swallows defence.”
“We lacked confidence and bravery at times in the final third, but our patience paid off as the second half progressed,” he added.
