Man City Defeat Chelsea, Edges Closer to League Top Spot
Manchester City scored a 1-0 victory over Chelsea last night, Thursday 5 January, and picked up another three points to make top-of-the-log Arsenal sweat.
The Citizens had a tough first half, feeling the pressure to close the English Premier League (EPL) title race gap, whereas the Blues had nothing to prove, having earned a sole win from their last eight matches and sitting 10th on the league table.
Come the second half, the visiting squad gained steam and substitute forward Riyad Mahrez, with some help from Jack Grealish, scored the only goal of the match at the 63rd minute.
City boss, Pep Guardiola, made some unusual choices for his side, and lambasted the elementary errors his more experienced players made, but in the end was happy with the win.
After the game, he admitted: “We struggled a lot in the first half – it was sloppy and slow and without rhythm.”
Nevertheless, the “definitely important” three points helped reduce the difference between Arsenal (sitting in the top spot with 44 points) and Man City to just five points.
