Man City Gain Winning Start to UEFA Knockout Stages

Manchester City walked away from their first UEFA Champions League knockout match with their heads held high after securing a 3-1 victory over FC Copenhagen last night, Tuesday 13 February.

The two teams went head-to-head at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Man City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne ensured the pressure was on their hosts from the start as he scored the first goal just 10 minutes into the match with help from his teammate, Phil Foden.

Copenhagen midfielder Magnus Mattsson wasn’t ready to go down without a fight, as he equalised the score at the 34th-minute mark.

Bernardo Silva ensured the visitors went into the half-time break with two goals on the scoreboard by his quick footwork in the 45th minute, assisted by De Bruyne.

The final goal of the match came two minutes into overtime, as Foden dealt the gut-wrenching blow to their hosts.

“The biggest players appear on the biggest stages,” Citizens manager Pep Guardiola said during the post-match press conference. “It’s the hour of truth. We started well. We have to do our job and finish it.”

He went on: “I’m just really pleased [with] the result.”
