Manchester City Thrash Newcastle 5-0
Manchester City made an example of Newcastle United at City of Manchester Stadium on Sunday, 8 May, and came away with a flawless 5-0 victory for their efforts.
In the wake of their recent 3-1 UEFA Champions League loss at the hands of Real Madrid, it was clear that the Citizens came into Sunday’s match with a vengeance.
Raheem Sterling scored a double for City, firstly at the 19th minute, and secondly at the 93rd minute in stoppage time. Team-mate Aymeric Laporte doubled the lead after 38 minutes, and Rodri scored with a 61st-minute header from Kevin De Bruyne’s corner.
The fourth goal was sealed in the 90th minute by substitute Phil Foden, diverting Oleksandr Zinchenko’s shot into the net.
Coach Pep Guardiola was jubilant in the post-match interview, praising his team for moving themselves three points clear of Liverpool with only three games left to play.
“[For] five years [we have been] doing this every three days,” he said. “If some people doubted us, they don’t know this team. It’s one of the best groups I ever trained in my life. Perfect afternoon. Three points, nine points to play for, four ahead on goal difference.”
