Orlando Pirates Secure Fifth Consecutive Derby Win
The Soweto Derby landscape remains firmly under the control of the Sea Robbers following a clinical 3-0 demolition of Kaizer Chiefs at a packed FNB Stadium on Saturday, 28 February, 2026.
The victory not only handed Orlando Pirates their fifth consecutive league win over their arch-rivals but also propelled them to the top of the Betway Premiership table with 41 points.
The Buccaneers took the lead just five minutes in when Tshepang Moremi’s long-range effort took a deflection off Flavio Silva to wrong-foot goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma, who was making his first start of the season.
Oswin Appollis doubled the lead in the 39th minute with a composed finish, before substitute Evidence Makgopa sealed the result with a 79th-minute header.
Reflecting on the tactical success, Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou highlighted the mental preparation required for the high-pressure clash: “We spoke to the players in many meetings during the week to try and manage their emotions. We knew that for most of them, it was their first derby.”
On the opposite bench, Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze offered a candid apology to the Amakhosi faithful, admitting the team was paralyzed by the occasion.
“We played with fear,” Kaze stated post-match. “We didn’t meet expectations, and fear spoiled our performance.”
The result leaves Chiefs 11 points adrift of their rivals as they head into a midweek fixture against Richards Bay.
