Police: Patrick Shai Committed Suicide

Actor Patrick Shai took his own life, according to the police.

Shai – who starred in various shows and films over the years, including “The River”, “Yizo Yizo” and “Critical Assignment” – was found dead by his wife, Mmasechaba, in the garage of his Dobsonville home on Saturday morning, 22 January.

According to police communications obtained by a local media outlet, Mmasechaba allegedly found the 57-year-old actor “hanging” in the garage, untied him and laid him down on the floor.

His family released a statement the same day, in which they mournfully confirmed his death.

“We sincerely ask you to give the family time to process this painful loss,” they wrote. “More details will be shared in due course. Thank you.”

Parliament spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, paid tribute to Shai, calling him “an inspiring figure beyond the arts fraternity, an exemplary leader and a true activist.”

“We are gutted and bitterly saddened; the presiding officers in Parliament are even more sorry for the pain his family, his wife and children are enduring at this moment and wish them strength,” he said.
