SABC in Hot Water with AKA over TV Show
The SABC’s goose may be cooked after AKA served them with legal papers over “The Braai Show”.
The cooking show – which was previously hosted by the “Jika” rapper – is set to debut its second season on 8 September, albeit with his rival, Cassper Nyovest, taking over hosting duties.
On Thursday, 12 August, entertainment commentator Phil Maphela revealed on Twitter that AKA’s management team recently issued a letter to the SABC, in which they demanded the broadcaster to cease production on the series.
Attaching a copy of this letter, Maphela explained its gist: “AKA owns 50% of #TheBraaiShow & is the Executive Producer. I reached out to AKA’s management to get clarity on his involvement on #TheBraaiShowWithCass, and per T Effect statement, he was not consulted for approval [sic].”
He added: “The other producers on this project made an offer and signed Cassper without AKA’s approval as co-owner and executive producer. Did Cassper know that AKA still owns the IP? [sic]”
Although the SABC apparently already halted production, AKA is also demanding production credit and “a 50% entitlement, as joint copyright owner, to all proceeds received in relation to the show.”
If these demands are not met within 48 hours, the rapper’s team will escalate the matter further.
