Sierra Leone: Justice Minister Gets Axed
The Justice minister of Sierra Leone has been fired.
President Julius Maada Bio gave no official explanation in a statement issued on Tuesday, 18 January, for the sacking of Anthony Yeiwoh Brewah, who also happens to be the country’s Attorney-General since 2020.
On the same day, the secretary of the president, Julius Sandy, issued a public notice of Mohamed Lamin Tarawalley’s appointment to the position.
Tarawalley will be the west African nation’s fourth Attorney-General and minister of Justice within three years.
The news broke several hours after allegations from local news outlets circulated on social media that Brewah had pardoned multiple prisoners on New Year’s Day. But what seemingly sealed his fate were leaked photos of himself at his house with one Baimba Moi Foray, who had been previously convicted of the homicide of a local deejay.
The pardons have since been revoked.
Brewah has not publicly commented on the allegations or on his sacking.
