Soweto Derby: Fans Frustrated Following Chiefs’ 3-2 Loss
The Soweto Derby over the weekend was a spectacle in both the positive and negative sense of the word, as Kaizer Chiefs’ ardent fans displayed rowdy behaviour following the club’s match against Orlando Pirates.
On Saturday, 9 March, Gauteng’s top two clubs clashed at a packed FNB Stadium in Johannesburg: as expected, the rivals put on action-packed performances.
Despite Chiefs’ valiant efforts, the Buccaneers walked away with a 3-2 victory.
However, this did not please a certain section of the Amakhosi faithful, who showed their ire and frustration by pelting interim coach, Cavin Johnson, with projectiles and other objects.
In a post-match press conference, Johnson commented about the attack, saying he did not even realise that it was happening.
“I didn’t see any guys; maybe I saw one bottle or two, but I did see police, and I don’t know who they were protecting, me or the players,” he said. “I think it would have been the same way if we had three [goals] and Pirates had two.”
Despite the disappointing loss (and the equally disappointing behaviour), Johnson added: “We want to say thank you to [the fans] for coming out … I thought they saw a good game of football at the derby; I don’t know when last you saw five goals in a derby.”
