Star-Studded Spaceflight Sparks Discussions

Katy Perry has made history as the first artist to perform in space, joining a high-profile all-female crew on Blue Origin’s latest mission.
The 40-year-old singer was accompanied by TV host Gayle King, civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, ex-NASA scientist Aisha Bowe, and author Lauren Sanchez, also the fiancee of Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos.
Launching from Launch Site One in West Texas on Monday, 14 April, the team experienced four minutes of weightlessness after crossing the Karman line, the boundary of space. Amid gasps and cheers, Perry serenaded the capsule with Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”, inspired by the breathtaking view of Earth.
The emotional journey drew star-studded support from Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner, and Khloe Kardashian, who cheered them on from the launch site. Upon return, a tearful Flynn described the view of the moon as a personal gift, while Perry gratefully kissed the ground in relief.
Despite its inspirational message, the flight attracted criticism from celebrities, including Olivia Munn, Amy Schumer, and Olivia Wilde, who questioned the cost and relevance of the mission during global hardship.
Nevertheless, the eleven-minute journey marked a bold moment for space tourism, women in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – and pop culture’s leap beyond Earth’s bounds.
