Suspended Itumeleng Khune Stripped of Captaincy
Kaizer Chiefs skipper, Itumeleng Khune, has been stripped of his captaincy and suspended from the club.
Two weeks ago, Khune reportedly showed up to training at Naturena under the influence of alcohol. As such, an internal investigation was subsequently launched into this lapse in discipline, as well as other alleged transgressions committed by him.
In a statement released on Thursday, 7 December, the club shared its findings: “At the conclusion of the club’s rigorous disciplinary processes last week, the committee has taken stern action and decided that Itumeleng Khune should be temporarily separated from the team until certain conditions have been fulfilled.
“The club has taken steps to address his transgressions and certain sanctions were instituted, including removing him from the club captaincy of Kaizer Chiefs.”
Additionally, the 36-year-old veteran goalkeeper “will be expected to attend and actively participate in certain programmes designed to support his personal growth and development, with support from the club” – once he completes these programmes, he will be allowed to return to the team.
Khune will now miss Kaizer Chiefs’ scheduled match against Polokwane City tomorrow, Saturday 9 December, at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.
