Suspended Player Included in Real Madrid’s UCL Squad

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has named the squad that will be facing off against Manchester City in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) second leg quarter-final clash, but it includes a startling name.

On Monday, 15 April, Ancelotti released a list of the 22 players who will be travelling to Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England for the match tomorrow night (Wednesday, 17 April).

Surprisingly, defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni was included on this list, despite the fact the 24-year-old Frenchman is ineligible for play.

Last Tuesday, 9 April, in Real’s 3-3 first-leg draw against City in the UCL quarter-finals, Tchouameni was penalised with his third yellow card.

Per UEFA regulations, players who receive three yellow cards face an automatic one-match suspension. Therefore, Tchouameni is prohibited from participating in tomorrow’s match.

While the midfielder may only be travelling to England to support his teammates, it cannot be ruled out that Ancelotti might have him play.

It wouldn’t be the first time that Los Blancos has fielded an ineligible player: in 2015, the club was disqualified from Spain’s Copa del Rey tournament after suspended winger, Denis Cheryshev, started in their round-of-32 match against Cadiz CF.
