Tyla Snaps Up a Grammy
Singer Tyla beat several artists to win a 2024 Grammy Award for the Best African Music Performance category for her song, “Water”, on Sunday, 4 February.
The awards ceremony was held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, and was attended by the who’s who of the music industry, including Taylor Swift, Céline Dion, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, and many more.
“Oh my – what the heck!” Tyla exclaimed happily during her acceptance speech before she went on to say: “Oh my gosh, guys. This is crazy. Like, I never thought I’d say, ‘I won a Grammy at 22 years old’.”
The Mzansi singer beat a slew of other African artists who were in the running for the same category, including Asake, Olamide, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Musa Keys.
While many South Africans were excited to see the young star receiving international recognition, some Nigerians didn’t feel quite the same way.
“South Africa won today but Nigeria will win on Wednesday [7 February] where it matters most,” one user wrote on Twitter the following day, referring to the semi-final AFCON match that will feature both countries later this week.
Either way, the young musician definitely deserves the accolade for all of her hard work.
