Victor Ikpeba to Super Eagles: Call Up George Ilenikhena
Retired footballer Victor Ikpeba is calling on the Nigerian national football team to recruit fast-rising star, George Ilenikhena.
Last Thursday, 19 September, Ilenikhena made his UEFA Champions League (UCL) debut, scoring for AS Monaco and aiding in their 2-1 triumph over FC Barcelona.
For his performance, the 18-year-old Nigerian striker was named “Man of the Match.” Moreover, he became the youngest player in UCL history to score for Monaco, breaking the record previously set by Kylian Mbappe.
In an interview with a Nigerian sports outlet (published on Monday, 22 September), Ikpeba shared his aspirations for Ilenikhena to receive a call-up to the Super Eagles at the earliest opportunity.
“I have been following the remarkable progress of the boy – he’s quick and will certainly be one for the future for the Super Eagles,” he commented. “I know that he has already been capped by the French age-grade team, but we can still get him to play for the Super Eagles.”
The 51-year-old legend continued: “I believe with the right and timely approach, beginning with getting to his family, he can go on to play for the Super Eagles … he is certainly one for the future, and we should do everything to get him.”
