“We Were Not Good Enough” – Man United Goalie
Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea, delivered a brutally honest verdict about his club after they were eliminated by Atletico Madrid from the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
The Red Devils lost 1-0 to the Spanish outfit at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening, 15 March, with Renan Lodi scoring the only goal at the 41st minute mark.
Man United have yet to lift a trophy in five years; the last time was when they won the Europa League in 2017.
In the post-match interview, a crestfallen De Gea shared his thoughts about their performance and subsequent elimination.
“It’s another tough moment for us,” he said. “I think [Atletico are] an experienced team, they know how to play those games very well and it’s a very difficult moment for us.
“They scored a goal; they are a tough team, so it was hard for us to create chances. We are out of one of the most important competitions so we are very sad.”
He dejectedly added: “This is where we are at the moment. It’s a difficult situation. We have to keep fighting. I feel very sad. But we were not good enough.”
