3-0 Loss Pushes Cape Town Spurs Further into Relegation
Cape Town Spurs are in the deep end of the relegation zone, with no chances of being rescued, after being handed a 3-0 loss by Stellenbosch FC at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday, 28 November.
Despite maintaining a 53% possession of the ball, Spurs were unable to contend with the guts and determination of their visitors, who struck within the first eight minutes: Iqraam Rayners gave Stellies a 1-0 lead with a clean shot from the edge of the goalbox.
Come the second half, team-mates Jayden Adams and Darrel Matsheke rounded up the final score to 3-0: Adams landed the second goal with a header in the 64th minute, while Matsheke followed up with the third and final goal 15 minutes later, courtesy of a close-range shot.
The game marked Stellenbosch’s ascent to fourth place (with 20 points) on the Premier Soccer League rankings. At the same time, it has increased 16th-placed Spurs’ chances of being relegated out of the league with a meagre three points.
And with Spurs set to face reigning league champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, on 13 December, the likelihood is all but a certainty at this point.
