Aitana Bonmati Wins Top FIFA Award

UEFA Women’s Player of the Year, Aitana Bonmati, has been named FIFA’s Best Women’s player for 2023.

On Monday evening, 15 January, Bonmati walked away from the Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony with the prestigious accolade.

The 25-year-old Spanish forward was instrumental in helping FC Barcelona Femeni win the UEFA Women’s Champions League title last June. Two months later, she helped guide the Spanish national team to the finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which saw them triumphing over England in a 1-0 thriller.

“A couple of weeks ago, I was nostalgic for an exceptional and unique year, but starting out this year, collecting this award, I feel very proud,” Bonmati said in her acceptance speech at the Apollo Theatre in London, England.

She continued: “I owe this to Barca, to the national team; I owe it to the great season that we’ve played. I’d like to thank my teammates; without all of you, I wouldn’t be here.”

Bonmati ended off on an empowering note: “I’d also like to say I am proud to be part of a powerful generation of women who are changing the game and the world.”
