Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Duma ka Ndlovu Faces Tax Evasion Charges
Filmmaker Duma ka Ndlovu is officially on the taxman’s hitlist, and Twitter/X couldn’t be happier.
Earlier this week, Ndlovu – who has created, produced and written for projects such as “Muvhango”, “Uzalo” and “Imbewu: The Seed” – handed himself to the police, where he was formally charged with fraud and tax evasion amounting to R25 million.
On Tuesday morning, 1 October, Ndlovu appeared alongside tax practitioners, Rodney Mutsharini and Maxwell Mloyi, at Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
According to the charges, Mutsharini and Mloyi allegedly aided Ndlovu in obscuring his financial dealings. As such, he failed to declare personal income tax and VAT, nor did he report corporate income tax for his inactive company, Ambrobrite, to the South African Revenue Service over multiple years.
If found guilty, the trio could either face a two-year prison sentence apiece or receive a hefty fine.
Ndlovu was granted R100 000 bail, while Mutsharini and Mloyi were each granted R50 000 bail.
Over on Twitter/X, tweeps joked about the filmmaker’s woes, attributing them to the GNU (AKA the Government of National Unity):
Some joked that it was all in the name of film-making, while others were a lil’ more scathing in their takes on the man:
Ultimately, @Tiisetso12394 summed it up best:
The case has been postponed to 11 November. And when that day arrives, social media will be full of spice and salt aplenty. Trust and believe!
