Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Fans Mourn Cancellation of “7de Laan”

Fans are in their feelings following the news that long-running soap opera, “7de Laan”, is coming to an end.

Created by Danie Odendaal and debuting all the way back in April 2000, the popular SABC2 soapie introduced beloved characters such as Maggie, Hilda, Altus, Xander and, of course, Oubaas. Through these characters, “7de Laan” entertained millions of fans across SA with their numerous (and dramatic) storylines.

But now, after nearly 24 years, the soapie’s getting canned – a statement was released on their official Twitter page on Monday, 17 July:

“‘7de Laan’ has penetrated the hearts of millions of South Africans,” says head of content for video entertainment for SABC, Lala Tuku. “With iconic characters over the years that still hold a place in the viewers’ hearts, powerful storylines crafted by a talented writing team engaged the audience on relevant topics.

“After more than two decades on air, the award-winning ‘7de Laan’ leaves a lasting imprint on the SA television landscape. SABC wishes all the dedicated and talented cast and crew of ‘7de Laan’ all the best on their future endeavours.”

Over in the Twittersphere, the “Laanies” were heartbroken:

Many shared their favourite memories associated with the show (shoutout to the iconic theme music!), while also showing love for their fave charries:

A LOT of people praised the show for bringing their Afrikaans First Additional Language skills up to scratch during their schooldays. They also wondered how the heck their own kids will learn Afrikaans now:

The Kiffness even chimed in with a sort-of tribute while ribbing Charlize Theron at the same time:

All in all, the folks are really sad about seeing “7de Laan” go, but they remain hopeful about seeing it revived in another capacity:

What do you think, folks? Would you be up to revisiting “7de Laan” one day, or is this the right time to say “Totsiens”? Let us know!
