Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Netizens Burn Nomzamo Mbatha for “small town” Vibes

South Africans abroad have a way with words that often put their home country on the global map – although for sometimes for dubious reasons.

Actress Charlize Theron made headlines in December 2022 saying that only 44 people in South Africa spoke Afrikaans, and comedian Trevor Noah is best known for hamming up anything related to Mzansi for laughs.

Now, it’s Nomzamo Mbatha who has put her foot in her mouth and got everyone on social media spitting fire at her.

The 34-year-old television personality was attending a United Nations General Assembly dinner in New York City, New York earlier in the week. In a video that has been doing the rounds online, she can be seen introducing herself, mentioning that she’s from “a small town called Durban.”

Needless to say, South African Twitter collectively LEPT at the chance to share their opinion on Mbatha’s statement. Some saw the forest for the trees and understood what was said:

Others took the “Tell Me Something Sweet” actress at face value and tried to correct her (well, mostly):

Everyone was either falling over themselves trying to explain what they had just witnessed, then you had the folks who were too dismayed and joked around:

No matter your personal persuasion, Mbatha got people talking about Durbs. Here’s hoping the conversation goes somewhere constructive. Knowing social media, the sky’s the limit and even that doesn’t stop twirra peeps!
