Germany Prepares Security for Euro 2024
Germany is taking all precautions to ensure the safety of fans and players at the European Championship, which is slated to start on 14 June.
The country’s Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, spoke with journalists on Tuesday, 4 June, to assure everyone gathered that they were taking all precautions to prevent threats from religious groups, hooligans, violent individuals and cyberattacks.
“You can never 100% guarantee security but we are well prepared and remain very vigilant,” she said.
Germany will be expecting 2.7 million fans to flock to their stadiums and up to 12 million in fan parks for outdoor viewing across the nation. However, a strong police presence, accompanied by officers from other countries and 16 000 volunteers, will all come together to protect the football community.
Faeser’s announcement comes just days after a policeman was stabbed at a right-wing rally in Mannheim. The rally had been held to expose the dangers posed by the “increasing spread and influence of political Islam,” according to its organisers. The attacker injured six people.
The tournament will kick off on Friday, 14 June, when Germany and Scotland go head-to-head at Allianz Arena in Munich.
