Real Madrid Trounce Man City 3-1
The semi-finals for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) are always an emotional affair, and last night, Wednesday 4 May, saw a hungry Real Madrid beat out Manchester City 3-1 to reach the finals.
The crowd at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, Spain were looking glum once City went one-up on the scoreboard at the 73rd minute, but they sprung to life once Carlo Ancelotti brought substitute Rodrygo onto the pitch.
The 21-year-old Brazilian performed a miracle and scored twice just before the expected final whistle, forcing the match into extra time, where his team-mate, Karim Benzema, sealed the Citizens’ fate by netting a penalty not even five minutes later.
Benzema’s strike was especially significant because it put him on par with Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of scoring ten goals in the knockout rounds of a UCL season, which the former achieved in the 2017/18 season.
Now, the UCL final is set for a showdown between Liverpool and Real Madrid on 28 May, and it promises to be a thriller.
