Rock and Rave: Stones Clear DJ’s Bootleg

A 25-year battle for music licensing freedom has concluded, as The Rolling Stones finally approved the official release of Fatboy Slim’s legendary track, “Satisfaction Skank”.

The mashup – created by Norman Cook by inserting the iconic riff from “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” into his own “The Rockafeller Skank” – was a fixture on dance floors and became one of the world’s most bootlegged recordings.

Despite Mick Jagger once saying he “liked the mix”, the band’s management repeatedly denied the sample commercial clearance for two decades. However, in a surprising reversal that echoes their 2019 resolution with The Verve over “Bittersweet Symphony”, the Stones recently gave their blessing.

Cook, who called the track “the one that could never be released”, was even supplied with the original master tapes (stems) of the 1965 anthem, delivered in an armoured van, to build a high-quality official version.

The 62-year-old DJ remains prolific, with 115 gigs in his busiest year and a new book. He confirmed the track’s status as a live favourite, stating: “It has been a favourite in my DJ sets for over a quarter of a century, I can confirm it is thoroughly road tested and fit for purpose.”

“Satisfaction Skank” is out on streaming services today, Thursday 11 December.
