Ronald Koeman’s Future with Barcelona Murky
The knives are out for Ronald Koeman after FC Barcelona suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to SL Benfica last night, Wednesday 29 September.
Rumours immediately started swirling after the final whistle that the La Liga team was considering sacking the 58-year-old coach, with him hinting that he doesn’t have the same amount of support as he did before.
In a post-match interview after the UEFA Champions League game, he said: “I feel supported by my players and their attitude. I don’t know about the rest. I don’t know about the club. I can’t say anything about my future because I don’t know how the club thinks in that sense.”
However, Koeman defended his Catalan squad, saying: “There’s no point in comparing this with Barcelona teams of years gone by. That’s as clear as water.”
Barca’s dreams of title glory are quickly fizzling out as they face the reality that they might not make the knockout stages of the competition – the Spanish giants last felt this pain in the 2003/04 campaign.
Koeman knows that only a win against Dynamo Kyiv in their next match on 20 October will save his and Barcelona’s bacon.
