Southampton Secure £7m Signing of Ben Brereton Diaz
Southampton are set to sign Ben Brereton Diaz from Villarreal for a fee of approximately £7 million.
The 25-year-old Chilean forward, who spent the latter half of the previous season on loan at Sheffield United, scored six goals across 14 English Premier League (EPL) appearances, despite the Blades’ relegation.
Diaz struggled to make a significant impact at Villarreal after moving from Blackburn Rovers last summer. He managed 20 appearances for the La Liga side but failed to score in his limited starts. Nonetheless, his prolific spell at Blackburn, where he scored 47 goals, including 36 in his final two seasons, highlighted his potential.
Southampton, recently promoted back to the EPL, are keen to strengthen their attacking options. With Che Adams departing and other forwards like Adam Armstrong, Sekou Mara, and Paul Onuachu yet to prove themselves in the league, Diaz’s arrival is timely.
Manager Russell Martin has been active in the transfer market, adding several players, including Taylor Harwood Bellis, Flynn Downes, Adam Lallana, and Charlie Taylor. Diaz’s versatility across the front line offers a valuable option as the Saints aim to establish themselves in the top flight.
