Sudan Hospital Strike: 64 Dead as Healthcare Toll Mounts

A devastating drone strike on the el-Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur has left 64 people dead, including 13 children and three medical staff.

The Friday night attack, which occurred during Eid-al-Fitr celebrations, wounded 89 others and forced the vital facility to close after its maternity and paediatric wards were destroyed.

While the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) blamed the Sudanese military for the strike, the army denied responsibility. However, officials reportedly suggested a nearby police station was the intended target.

The strike underscores a brutal trend in the three-year conflict; the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that 2 036 people have now died in 213 attacks on Sudanese healthcare.

Condemning the violence, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated: “Health care should never be a target. Peace is the best medicine.”

The destruction of the hospital has left thousands in the RSF-controlled region without urgent care. With 11 million people displaced and 33 million requiring aid, the UN describes the situation as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

Legal groups are now calling for an independent investigation into the atrocity to ensure those responsible face justice.
