Tottenham Vows Action Against Homophobic Chants
Tottenham Hotspur have strongly condemned homophobic chants from sections of their supporters during their recent 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester, England, on Sunday, 29 September.
The Spurs expressed deep concern over the bigoted behaviour, which reportedly targeted individuals such as Man United midfielder Mason Mount and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
In a statement released via the club’s official website, Spurs described the chanting as “unacceptable” and “hugely offensive”, stressing that it has no place in football.
The club announced it “will be working closely with the Police and stewards to identify anyone instigating or joining in with the chanting” before adding that they will “take the strongest possible action”.
Tottenham have encouraged fans to report any discriminatory behaviour witnessed during the match, ensuring full confidentiality. The club also reaffirmed its ongoing collaboration with its LGBTQ+ supporters’ group, Proud Lilywhites, to foster a welcoming environment for all fans.
The Proud Lilywhites shared their disappointment over the chants, emphasising that it alienates LGBTQ+ supporters, who are equally part of the Spurs fanbase. The group called for unity and respect among all fans.
